“The sea, the snot green sea, the scrotum tightening sea,” – James Joyce

Chilly and Sylo hadn’t been happy about being evicted from the cabin but the combined scowls from Dirk and Renner had prevailed. Dirk noticed that Chilly simply frowned and avoided eye contact as he left, but Sylo had a strange expression on his face, an unreadable look that was only a glance but looked to Dirk like an invitation, or a plea. He resolved to get done with Renner and pull the young man aside for a private chat.

Renner made himself comfortable on the ratty old couch in the front room of the cabin. Through the open doors in the back of the room Dirk could see a kitchen on the left with a stack of dirty dishes on a wooden table that canted to the left precariously and on the right the end of a metal army cot with an old olive drab army blanket and a rumpled sheet that looked in dire need of a washing machine with hot water and strong detergent.

When the smell of sweat and other stale body fluids hit his nose he began shallow breathing, thinking that coming inside might not have been the best idea he’d had that day. Maybe, he thought, he’d interview the other two al fresco and hope their voices didn’t carry too far.

Renner looked up at him, then nodded at the chair across the coffee table from him, as ratty as the sofa. Turk sat gingerly.

“Okay, Mr. Renner,” he said. “I’d like to go back over what happened the night of the incident, and please, try to remember anything that you might have forgotten when I talked to you yesterday.”

Renner scowled. “Look, I already told you everything I know, everything I saw,” he said. “What more do you want me to say?”

Turk leaned forward and tried to put a sympathetic look on his face. “I’m not accusing you of anything, Mr. Renner,” he said in a soft voice. “It’s just that it’s been my experience that people often see more than they think they see. Now, you did see the ship, the one that sank, right?”

“Yeah, I saw it. One of those boats that take people whale watching. There’s about two a week that come through here.”

“Good, good, now close your eyes and tell me exactly what you saw,” said Turk.

Renner winced and frowned but complied.

“Well, I saw the ship,” he said. “It was all lit up. They always are. Never understood why. Lights just scare away the fish and if there are no fish the whiles won’t be there. Besides, you can’t see shit at night. Anyway, it was just sailing along, then it broke in half and sank.”

Dirk had his notepad out but he took no notes. For one thing, Renner had said nothing he didn’t already know and for another, he wanted to put the man at ease.

“Think about that moment, will you?” he asked. “The ship broke in half you say. Describe it for me.
